Vietnam’s City Trials RFID Technology

Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City has recently launched an innovative trial that uses rfid technology to collect roadside parking fees. In District 1 on Ba Hai Trung Street and Le Ly Street and in District 5 on Van Hu Chi Street, this new system aims to improve parking management through technology and increase the efficiency of the city. According to a notice from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transportation to Volunteer Youth Public Service Co., Ltd., the rfid trial will run for three months. This company has been given the important task of collecting parking fees for the city. Although no specific start date was mentioned, the news has attracted much attention.

    How it works?

The use of rfid marks an important step forward for Ho Chi Minh City in parking management. Vehicles parked on the designated streets will be charged automatically using an electronic wallet or an electronic tag (via rfid reader scanner). This new solution not only helps to reduce direct contact with drivers and lower the risk of conflicts, but it also shortens the time needed to download apps and make payments. As a result, both residents and visitors can enjoy a more convenient and efficient parking experience.

In the current parking fee system, the MyParking software is used to simplify the payment process by combining popular electronic wallets such as Momo, Zalopay, and Viettelpay with domestic and international credit card options. However, users have still reported errors in payment processing and vehicle location. The rfid trial is designed to tackle these challenges and improve the system’s reliability and accuracy.

It is important to note that the implementation of the rfid trial was not done overnight. Volunteer Youth Public Service Co., Ltd. has taken on the task of choosing a technology solution provider to strengthen the management of roadside parking in Ho Chi Minh City. When the trial period ends, the authorities will evaluate the success of this solution and then decide if they should expand the rfid-based parking fee system to other parts of the city.

    Bringing Innovation and Efficiency

This innovative step by Ho Chi Minh City is not only a change from the traditional way of collecting parking fees, but it also shows the city’s progress towards smart and digital development. By introducing advanced rfid technology, Ho Chi Minh City expects to improve management efficiency and the travel experience for its residents. Moreover, given the current state of parking fee collection, the new system could have a positive impact on the city’s finances. According to statistics from Volunteer Youth Public Service Co., Ltd., parking fee revenue from January to June this year has exceeded 3.8 billion Vietnamese dong (about 149,460 USD). With the wider use of rfid technology, this revenue may increase further and help the city grow in a sustainable way.

The trial of using rfid for automatic parking fee collection in Ho Chi Minh City is an initiative that many people look forward to. It will help to improve city management and enhance the travel experience of residents while driving the city toward a smarter, more digital future. In the near future, rfid technology may become the main trend in parking management in this vibrant city in Vietnam.
