Almost every credit or debit card, as well as many mobile phones, now include radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. This enables contactless payments, allowing users to simply wave their bank card, ID, or phone over a reader. The device then scans the information and processes the transaction instantly.

This technology has made many transactions faster and more convenient for both businesses and consumers. RFID chips are also widely used for speeding up toll payments, tracking livestock on large farms, and processing visa information for international travelers.

However, RFID technology has also led to security concerns. Since it continuously transmits sensitive data, it is vulnerable to a new form of hacking known as contactless crime. This is especially concerning for consumers who appreciate the convenience of RFID but do not want to risk exposing their bank details, personal identification, or other private information to potential threats.

    RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification, a technology that enables machines to read signals from RFID chips embedded in packages, passports, credit cards, and other smart devices. While RFID has become an essential part of modern contactless payments and asset management, it has also raised concerns about security risks and potential misuse by cybercriminals. Early versions of RFID used copper wire coils to open security doors. Modern RFID is much more advanced, but it still works on the same basic idea.

    Although it is possible to copy these magnetized patterns, the process has always been complex and slow. Modern RFID chips do not send out a radio frequency like a radio station broadcasts, so your information is not spread all over the world.     Do you need RFID blocker technology?

    While contactless crime and skimming attacks are becoming more common and advanced, current RFID technology does not send your information far. This makes it much harder for criminals to steal your data unless your bank cards or ID have already been taken.

    In 2018, RFID skimming attacks were very rare because a criminal needed to be very close to you to capture your information. A report from the United Kingdom that year showed no evidence that someone could use contactless theft to steal data from a card without also taking the card itself. Therefore, a person with a scanner cannot simply walk by and instantly grab your data, since RFID signals do not travel far from the chip.

    If a criminal does steal your bank card or another document, they could use a scanner to access some personal details from the RFID chip. Some YouTube videos show that advanced scanners can read a bank card and extract important information, which is one way identity theft might happen. However, even the best RFID blocker wallet cannot stop this process if a thief takes your whole wallet, purse, or bag, because then they can use their scanner on the entire item.

    How to manage RFID information & prevent identity theft

    RFID blocking can give you some peace of mind, but it might not stop a thief from stealing your money or personal details if they take your documents. Many items like bank cards or passports that use RFID also have extra security features to prevent skimming. For example:

      • Credit and many debit cards use a one-time transaction code that is strongly encrypted to finish a payment.
      • The data on your bank cards that can be scanned does not include extra personal details, such as the security code on the back, which makes it less attractive to criminals.
      • Government documents like passports have special encryption that is much harder to break without approved scanners.
      • Passports also come with several layers of RFID blocking material, leaving only a small area for approved scanning, which makes it tougher for thieves to copy your data.

    For a criminal to steal your information, they must stand very close to you for a long enough time to capture your bank or passport details—and this close contact is usually noticeable. Then, they would need to decode the little bit of information they got, which takes time. Finally, they would have to figure out how to use this incomplete data, which is not enough to quickly access your social security number, bank account, health benefits, or other private information.

    Even though skimming crimes might increase as more people use contactless payments and similar methods, these crimes are still hard to pull off and do not give a fast reward. In fact, security experts note that it is much easier to buy stolen identity information from the dark web to get access to credit or bank accounts.

    Instead of buying a novelty wallet or purse, you should check the security features on your documents or bank cards to understand how companies are protecting you with the latest technology.
